Orange Ribbon Awareness
Anorexia and Bulima have been two of the more common disorders among females,
but self injury is a newer and more secretive problem. Females, as well as males,
have this issue, but it is reported more often in the female population. Some of the reasons
for this problem are past abuse, not being able to cope with pain effectively, and low self
esteem. Some celebrities who have spoken out about self injury are princess Diana, Angelina
Jolie, Christina Ricci, and Fiona Apple. The Orange ribbon is a symbol, giving awareness
to this disorder. As well as websites and books such as The Bright Red Scream and The
Luckiest Little Girl in the World written by psychologist Steven Levenkron.

Zen is not just Buddahism
Shiseido has a new fragrance that is symbolic of their Japanese origin. A gold cube shaped
bottle with a clear top has a very traditional, yet new age design. A Japanese woman
with a flowing golden gown that curves throughout the ad is paired with long red gloves
and sash that is acrobatic looking. The fragrance balances the meditative scent with
sensation and emotion.

The Vogue Asia Standard of Beauty: White Blonde Girls
Vogue India features "poor" people on the street to model such as items as
a Louis Vuitton baby bib and has an old man holding a Burbery umbrella.
Vogue India has just come out this past year and the magazine is still
making editorial judgements as to how one should market luxury goods in
a country with a wide socioeconomic divide. Vogue China launched,in 2005,
has not had the same problems because most of the poor live in more rural
areas. Both issues have had a public relations problems with their debut
covers because they have Australian model,Gemma Ward, in the center of both
issues. The objection is that even though both magazines have Indian and
Chinese models, the attention is given to the Caucasian model and not the more
ethnic, less Anglo look. The Indians are more sensitive to this, having been
under British colonial rule and the feeling lighter skinned Indians are
considered more beautiful. Vogue appears to have pictured Western beauty
standards in a different cultural market.
Another War in Israel?
Leonardo DiCaprio's girlfriend Israeli model,Bar Raefeli, is taking American
culture on the road. She is on a Bravo TV show called American Ironic Iconic
and is pictured traveling across the states with a male co-host. Bar Raefeli
says growing up in Israel she was exposed to American trends. This is Raefeli's
peaceful job, but controversy broke out when Israel appointed her to be
its representative at an upcoming tourism event in London. Some stated Raefeli
is not a good spokesperson because she took off for America in order to avoid
serving in the Israeli army. Oy Vey.

Risque Fashion Power
No one blinked at the Marc Jacobs fashion show when a model wore a sheer
black top with a revealig nipple ring, the Chris Benz show had see-through
camisoles, and at Derek Lam's a girl's breasts were visible. Calvin Klein,
the all "American" designer showed a transparent raincoat with only a
thong underneath. In the 2008 political year, the fashion world is making
a political statement. As a society we are at war about wich way to go.
We have become desensitized to images of sex , so some designers even went
for the bondage look. Deigner's intention to provoke social reaction, like
that of four decades ago, might have done better putting lipstick on a
pig. Palin's lipstick Hillary's pants, and Cindy McCain's $300,000
outfit are up for your vote with the rest of the collections.

Ellen Dances for Cover Girl
Ellen Degeneres is signing a contract with Cover Girl and it is considered
a different marketing approach from their traditional campaigns. In the
past, models like Christie Brinkley represented C.G. for over 20 years.
Ellen represents a new trend to use a popular role model instead of a
traditional role model. They have used Queen Latifah and some latina/more
ethnic looks. Diane Keaton and Andie MacDowell are "older" models selling
cream and hair dye. Even Christie Brinkley was brought back in her older
age.

Hilton Hotel's Next Gen Flops
Hotel heiress Nicky Hilton and Robert Falor planned "Nicky O. Hotels", but
despite the famous name the business is not getting off to a good start. Mr.
Falor, a real estate developer wanted to have more than a $1 billion worth
of property around Miami and Chicago. He had newspapers calling him the "condo-
hotel king", but is today almost bankrupt. Two hotels in the trendy South Beach
area were to be marketed under Nicky Hilton's name. Robert Falor pretended
to own property that was not his, mismanaged finances, and used business funds
for personal luxury cars and a jet. Rande Gerber, husband of Cindy Crawford,
was going to work with Maxim magazine to open one of his bars in Mr. Falor's
Royal Palm Hotel in Miami, but this will not occur. The main reason the hotels
failed is because they were priced wrong. Another blunder happenned between
Robert Falor and Nicky Hilton where he sued her for not promoting the hotels
as promised. She was going to use David Letterman, People Magazine, and
designer Roberto Cavalli to promote the hotels and this did not occur. Mr.
Falor and Ms. Hilton settled out of court for an undisclosed amount. It looks
like Nicky Hilton will leave the hotel legacy to the "older" generation.

Marc Bouwer Bows of Fashion Week
Marc Bouwer wil not be showing his collection at NYC's fashion week.
He is going to show his cloths online because it wil reach a wide
audience and the internet is a great way to see the show. A designer
can spend anywhere from 200,000 to $1 millon to be a part of Fashion
Week. Foreign brands such as Gucci and Hermes are doing well because
of the euro's value, but retailers, designers, and consumers are cutting
back. Retail sales acoording to the American Asociation of Apparel and
Footwear, were up in 2007. In 2007, the fashion industry made $350 billion
in sales. This year the shopping sprees are slowing down.

piece was going to be auctioned at $2.8 million. Plans have changed and the
artwork entitled, Siren, will be diplayed at the British Museum. He has
done another white painted bronze of Moss named Sphinx. The display will

Olympic swimmer Dara Torres modeled at Fashion Week for Charles
Nolan's spring collection at the designer's Chelsea studio. She
just won three silver medals in Beijing and is a twelve time
Olympic medalist. She made her catwalk debut wearing a blue and
white stripped tank top and navy swim shorts, while carrying
her two yer old daughter, Tessa. She seems to think it is harder
to compete against 16 year old athletes than modeling. She is an
inspirational 41 year old who does not sin easily.

Is Model T.V. a Good Role Model?
A new reality television show is going to be showing the modeling industry,
but some are objecting to this stle of show giving teenage females unrealistic
expectations and making them feel like something is "wrong" with them. The
new show, Model T.V. is coming up soon and one will see how well it turns
out. There have been other shows like America's Next Top Model and I Want to
be a Model, hosted by Nikki Taylor. People in the industry are trying to make
the public more aware of issues such as weight by doing a French public service
announcement with an anorexic model. They have also tightened age and weight
requirements due to the death of a Brazilian model.

Suing Over Split Ends
Kate Hudson and hair guru David Bakkai for Wild Aid, a company which has
hair products containing ingredients considered non-harmful to the enviroment,
are being sued by Lab 220. This company claims Kate Hudson stole a sample of
theirs containing volcanic ash. The actress denies this and is creating this
hair line with Bakkai. They have already sold some products on the Home Shopping
Network. Lab 220 is suing for appropriation of trade, fraud, and breech of
contract, but the agreement is supposedly verbal. One will have to wait to see
how much more the volcano will erupt.

Pointy Toe Pumps
One of the shoes for the fall/winter season is the pump with the pointy toe.
It illustrates how women can mean business in these powerful and sexy shoes.
These shoes also can work with jeans. Designers such as; Jimmy Choo, Kate

of choosing different patterns and prices.

Purple is the hot color of the fall/winter season. It is in every hue from
lilac to fuschia and it seems to be on every fashion item such as; belts,
shoes, dresses, and jackets. A company named Protone tends to deal with fabric
retailers and other fashion insiders before the designers even begin their
new lines. Protone uses surveys, graphic layouts, focus groups, and visual
aides to assess the tastes and trends of potential customers and the fashion
industry. This year they must be a pasion for purple.

Alice Dellal is more grunge than fashionista. She loves '90s grunge and punk,
which only touches on her half-shaved mane, the nose ring, and ripped tights.
Dellal is based in London, but is a favorite of Paris "Vogue" and photographers
such as Nick Knight. She combines rock and fashion; Uncle Mick Jagger and Uncle
Mario Testino are her godfathers. Alice says; "My family influences me a lot".

mixed reviews. Alice Dellal is a rock and roll model too look out for

Juicy Couture: Lets Them Eat Cake
The new ads for Juicy Couture have a tasty tagline; "Let Them Eat Tracksuits".
Ten colorfully dressed models pose on the beach showing the label's tracksuits.
The graphics are appealing because each outfit is matched to a surfboard the
same color. This shows creativity and makes even the most non-athletic want
to ride the waves or go for a jog on the beach. This line is not only for women,
but men and children can also have a piece of the pie. Juicy Couture also
shows off their handbags and other accessories. One has to wonder with the
Olympics, is fashion or sports taken more seriously?
Stylista: The Devil Wears Prada meets The Real World

Paris Hilton: Wigging Out
Paris Hilton wil be the new spokesmodel for a hairproduct named Bandit.
The product will be a handband which has hair extensions attached. The
company which has created this design is Sally's Beauty Supplies. I am not so excited for this look, which has been around for a long time and always looks fake. Hopefully the bandit can make a more fashion-forward headband hairpiece.

Get Fit While You Flop
FitFlops, invented by Marcia Kilgore the founder of Bliss Spas, are the new
shoe for fitness and comfort. The 1970s had Dr. Scholl's exercise sandals, the
'80s Reeboks, and Birkenstocks and Mephistos have followed. FitFlops were
featured on Oprah's Favorite Things", foam exercise sandals. They make your feet
look smaller and help one your body. The FitFlop web site reports that they
"have been shown to trigger increased gluteal muscle response, increased hamstring
response, and help improve thih and calf muscles. Marcia Kilgore likes to think
of these shoes as jolie-laide, or pretty-ugly. Some have given positive
fashion feedback and others migh not care whether they are in vogue. The Fitflops
priced at $49.99 are reasonable and seem to be a blissful way to walk.

Ralph Lauren does the Olympics
Ralph Lauren ,the icon of "American" design, has won a gold medal at this summer's
Olympic games. He got to see the American athletes wear his clothes in the opening

his typical "preppy", wholesome, and nationalistic spirit. The all "American"

Haute Rocks
The famous House of Bulgari will be 125 years old next year and is still
sizzling with its jewelry. One of their necklaces is selling for a mere
$500,000. The 49 emeralds, three tourmalines, twelve mandarin garnets, all the
diamonds, and 18-karat gold are the dazzlng gemstones, but the price reflects
time. It takes on average, three to four months to source a grouping of stones
and drafting a design can be three months, with about 60 revisions. There are
160 elements with the assembly of this piece and that is almost another two
months. The customer service requests arecan also be time consuming with a
Tokyo client wanting to see a few stones while on vacation inthe riviera. This
Italian brand is known for mixing precious and semiprecious stones in vibrant
colors. One only hopes Bulgari will wear as well in the next one hundred years.

Bedroom Eyes
The look this fall is back in black for eye makeup. The jet set will be impresed
to note the dark shadow tones down the romantic aura. The beauty creative design
director for Proctor and Gamble", says; "it is not a romantic smoky eye"...it's a
bold, architectural one, accented with luxurious chrome touches", referring to her

metallic sheen that's modern and futuristic. A new twist on an old movie star look
is back. Pat McGrath, the creative designer, also wears Bourjois Khol and Contour
in Noir Expert 01. She uses this black pencil and blends black cream shadow around
the eyes in an extended oval. The lok is intense, but can be toned down by smudging
black pencil around the eyes instead of the heavier shadow.

When Fashion and Architecture Collide
Designers are using strong geometric shapes in both fashion and furniture.
If one follows design history, changes in shape tend to be triggered by
timing and technology. Society is feeling the need to assert itself due
to factors such as the recession, oil shock, and the Iraqi war. In extreme
eras like World War II, Vietnam, and Watergate, the trend heads to more
angular and curved shapes. Designers also need a change from straight lines.
The jagged edge is popular with a designer named Grcic, who creates his
shapes and then makes them digital. The blob or oval in the age of the new
internet and then the digital ripple were a reflection of past technology,
but now we are in the age of the angle. If this helps us express our angst
and release or assert our anger; this is a creatively passive and cathartic
fashion to do it.

The Seductive Embrace of Lace
Lace is the latest craze in fashion and the quiet town of St. Gallen,
Switzerland, about an hour east of Zurich, is where Prada has revived this
style. The Prada design team went to a lace company, Forster Rohner, and
were shown a selection of embroideries. Prada has featured in all of its 42
looks what has become the most photographed collection of the season. "The
New York Times Style Magazine" says lace is the latest craze and is brining
back a look that was popular in the late 1960's.
In the fall fashion shows Proenza Schouler in New York and Givenchy and Alexander
McQueen in Paris have also been revamping the style. The Prada lace would not
be mistaken for anything belonging to your grandmother. They had patterns in
gold, black, orange, and metallic blue. Sometimes the lace was 3-D, with flowers
sewn onto flowers, so the models were both provacative and innocenct at the
same time. Even Victoria's Secret orders 200,000 meters of a particular pattern.
St. Gallen lace is not just the trend of the day, according to creative director
of Akris. Lace may be this seasons revived fabric, but next season the designers
will take another fad and make something old something new again.

and Austria-Hungary , he lived in a society where diamonds and Faberge were
part of his social fabric. As a child he would play with them and touch them.
As an adult, he has just begun his Prince Dimitri collection of fine jewelry.
